Summary

Emmett returns home to pick-up his little brother Billy, tie-up his late father's estate and get out of town for good。 Since leaving the Kansas youth facility where he's served time, Emmett has wanted one thing: to give them both a fresh start - and that means heading out to the sparkling west。

Young, precocious Billy has plans of his own - to get to San Francisco, where he believes their long-estranged mother is waiting for them。 However, as soon as they've loaded Emmett's bright blue Studebaker with their few belongings, trouble arrives and brings its sidekick in the form of Duchess and Woolly, two runaways from the very facility Emmett just left behind him。

Insatiable Duchess and his devoted, but slow companion Woolly soon wreck Billy's plan to get onto the open road, one well-intentioned blunder at a time。 Each young man sees this journey as his chance to pursue his dreams, settle scores and find riches。 And a simple journey quickly becomes a dazzling odyssey filled with obstacles, villains and ruses fit only for heroes to overcome。

Bursting with life, charm and unforgettable characters, The Lincoln Highway is an extraordinary journey through 1950s America from a master storyteller。

Another great story by Amor Towles with deep development of highly perceptive but flawed characters, underlying philosophy, well-placed transitions, and purposeful callbacks that tie up loose ends。

I adore Amor Towles。 His style of narration and intelligence is always a joy but this story felt like an ill fitting suit。 It felt like Cary Grant trying to play John Steinbeck。 I wanted to believe the characters more than I did。 I wanted to care about the characters more than I did。

“ The Lincoln Highway” is a book about character and by giving the reader four primary characters to enjoy the author also gives the reader a sense of the narrator’s personality and his( and at times, her ) underlying emotions。 These narrative changes plus the author’s use of a dash instead of quotation marks to indicate dialog, takes a bit of getting used to, but I got into the flow quickly simply because of “ The Lincoln Highway” being such a wonderful, entertaining tale。 Without summarizing t “ The Lincoln Highway” is a book about character and by giving the reader four primary characters to enjoy the author also gives the reader a sense of the narrator’s personality and his( and at times, her ) underlying emotions。 These narrative changes plus the author’s use of a dash instead of quotation marks to indicate dialog, takes a bit of getting used to, but I got into the flow quickly simply because of “ The Lincoln Highway” being such a wonderful, entertaining tale。 Without summarizing the plot in detail, and thereby spoiling your enjoyment, the book is an on- the- road tale in which Emmett and his younger brother start of on a quest: to drive from their farm home in Nebraska to California to find the mother who just went off and left them a few years ago。 They are quickly joined by two acquaintances - friends would be too strong a word- of Emmet。 Naturally, the two parties have different plans for the trip, which sets up for adventure。 The book’s nearly six hundred pages flew quickly by as I read with enjoyment。 I am sure you will also。 There are laughs, dramatic flourishes , comradeship and hidden agendas。 Not to mention a girl who will not be left behind。 The only reason The book gets a four star rating is that the ending left me a bit disappointed as there seemed so much more story to tell。 Still, a recommended novel。 。。。more

Although I didn't love it quite as much as "A Gentleman in Moscow", this was a wonderful roller coaster ride across the country。 It was another story filled with surprises around every corner。 I found myself rooting for all these great characters。 Although I didn't love it quite as much as "A Gentleman in Moscow", this was a wonderful roller coaster ride across the country。 It was another story filled with surprises around every corner。 I found myself rooting for all these great characters。 。。。more

Ten days that capture a whole lifetime of memories, pain, and experience。 The Lincoln Highway is another triumph that leaves you with a whole new set of characters you feel like you know by the end of the story。 Each character is truly their own protagonist to their own chapters。 I was amazed by the depth of each characters backstory, the imagery Towles created for each location, and how everything connecting perfectly in the end。 Worth reading then reading again and again。Was it as good as Gent Ten days that capture a whole lifetime of memories, pain, and experience。 The Lincoln Highway is another triumph that leaves you with a whole new set of characters you feel like you know by the end of the story。 Each character is truly their own protagonist to their own chapters。 I was amazed by the depth of each characters backstory, the imagery Towles created for each location, and how everything connecting perfectly in the end。 Worth reading then reading again and again。Was it as good as Gentleman in Moscow? This is one of the best books I’ve read in a long time! Towels is an incredible storyteller。

No question about it, you need to put pedal to the metal and read Amor Towles' The Lincoln Highway, a Huckleberry Finn for modern-day America。 It's an exuberant tale of young people on a quest that brings every character vividly to life, utterly memorable, with so much great writing and insight that it is simply staggering at times。 I could quibble with a few little things -- and perhaps with the ending, which I'm still thinking about -- but I can't deny the brilliance of the book from start to No question about it, you need to put pedal to the metal and read Amor Towles' The Lincoln Highway, a Huckleberry Finn for modern-day America。 It's an exuberant tale of young people on a quest that brings every character vividly to life, utterly memorable, with so much great writing and insight that it is simply staggering at times。 I could quibble with a few little things -- and perhaps with the ending, which I'm still thinking about -- but I can't deny the brilliance of the book from start to finish。 。。。more

Well written I just didn’t like the story。 Too much anxiety。

Best Ever read。What a story teller Mr。 Towels can be。 Someone asked me what am I reading, just the other day。 I said a book about people who make less than $5000, a year。 I may be right。 No matter what, Ulysses is a super power, in my opinion, just like Billy。

Just finished the book yesterday and absotively 😂 loved it。 This book will be placed on my shelf of special favorites that I read many times。 I got some distinct Tom Sawyer/Hick Finn vibes along the way, but I never saw that ending coming。 All along I was thinking it is a book about a kid named Emmett and his brother Billy。 I closed the book and found myself wondering whose story was Billy writing? Emmett? Duchess? Woolly? Who is the Prince of Tides?

3。5 - the writing is beautiful, but the book too long (576 pages) and I started to get annoyed with some of the characters by the end。

From the first page it's clear this book has spunk。 An all round great read。Each of the characters is developed so realistically and so deeply, you feel like you understand each of them in the way only an omnipotent narrator can truly know it's characters。The way the story is told from the different perspectives of each of the characters is not a new idea but they Towles executed this was flawless。 Even how Wooly's parts weren't done in the first person so you could only ever get to know him fro From the first page it's clear this book has spunk。 An all round great read。Each of the characters is developed so realistically and so deeply, you feel like you understand each of them in the way only an omnipotent narrator can truly know it's characters。The way the story is told from the different perspectives of each of the characters is not a new idea but they Towles executed this was flawless。 Even how Wooly's parts weren't done in the first person so you could only ever get to know him from arm's length。 I loved how Sally fed into the storyline。 She is a brilliant character albeit not a main one。 I thought the way she fit into the story was brilliant and unexpected。How each of these characters movements were intertwined to impact one another was woven together so elegantly, it was seriously beautiful to read。 。。。more

This was my jam from the first page to the last。 The cast of characters is so downright, gosh darn endearing。 Towles has done it again。 Fun coincidence: the book was released 10 days ago and the events of the book take place over 10 days!

It's a great story, well written, suspenseful, not wrapped up too tidy leaving lots of room for imagination。 The author digresses beautifully, just as he did in his other books。 I'm looking forward to his next novel。 He's one of my favorites。 It's a great story, well written, suspenseful, not wrapped up too tidy leaving lots of room for imagination。 The author digresses beautifully, just as he did in his other books。 I'm looking forward to his next novel。 He's one of my favorites。 。。。more

Awesome story。Wonder what happens to Emmett later。 That'll be a great one。I recall Michael Chabon's The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay。 One of my all time fiction favourites。 I imagine that Emmett and Billy's later story could be sth like that。。。how they survive in a big city in post war America。 and start a business empire, in this case real estate。。。? Superior character development。 I know some are complaining that certain characters were not believable but this IS fiction and every character belongs right where they are in the book。 The ending kind of shocked me。 I did not see that coming and it is problematic for reasons I can’t reveal as they would be spoilers。 Suffice it to say that The Lincoln Highway was a worthwhile listen。 The narration was enjoyable and I may just listen again。

This novel is a combination of humor and malice - three men are on the road, each with their own story and baggage。 At times, they are friends and at others, they work against each other。 All of which comes to a conclusion that left me feeling edgy and uncomfortable。

David Christie

funny。 poignant。 witty。 (mostly) lovable, believable characters。 compelling and ingeniously told plot。 wow。

Very good book。 A bit sad, but the character development and character motivation made it a very good read。 I will have to read the authors other books。

I liked Rules and Gentleman is one of my top 5 books ever。 Yes it was lengthy but I was sad to reach the end。 I wanted it to go on for another 500 pages。 On the other hand, Highway was a major disappointment。 It reminded me of some of Booth Tarkington books I read as a teen。 This was sophomoric to the max。 There were a few splashes of cleverness interspersed with reams of tedium。 It's hard for me to believe all three books were written by the same author。 I liked Rules and Gentleman is one of my top 5 books ever。 Yes it was lengthy but I was sad to reach the end。 I wanted it to go on for another 500 pages。 On the other hand, Highway was a major disappointment。 It reminded me of some of Booth Tarkington books I read as a teen。 This was sophomoric to the max。 There were a few splashes of cleverness interspersed with reams of tedium。 It's hard for me to believe all three books were written by the same author。 。。。more

It only took me 5 days to read this book but not because I loved it, I just wanted to get it over and done with… Not ideal。At nearly 600 pages my proof copy was hefty enough to give me killer shoulder pain, but sadly it wasn’t quite worth it all。 I didn’t connect with the characters at any point, and the narrative structure didn’t help — why did there have to be so many POVs?? My copy also had a chunk of 30-odd pages missing towards the end, which didn’t exactly add to my reading pleasure。 I als It only took me 5 days to read this book but not because I loved it, I just wanted to get it over and done with… Not ideal。At nearly 600 pages my proof copy was hefty enough to give me killer shoulder pain, but sadly it wasn’t quite worth it all。 I didn’t connect with the characters at any point, and the narrative structure didn’t help — why did there have to be so many POVs?? What a story teller! I found it a bit wordy at times because I wanted to know what was happening with the characters。 Just like A Gentleman in Moscow, you will either like his prose and character development or not。 I thought it was an interesting story but didn’t care for the chronology in telling of this particular tale。 It will be interesting to see if or how the movie is depicted from the book。

Really, really enjoyed this book。 I loved Gentleman in Moscow, Rules of Civility not as much。 But the premise to this story was just as advertised。 There may be some Greek/Homer type book that this story is supposed to parallel but those stories all run together for me。 I really loved this story。 Until the last two paragraphs。 That didn't need to happen。 Did it?
